Since the Dawn of Time, Man has always relied on Mother Nature for survival. So it may come as no surprise that Man developed "religion" as a way to explain all that was happening around them. The World was full of Magic and Enchantment! The Mysteries of Life were all around! Mankind was unable to explain all that was going on, thus they believed a "higher power" was in control of the events Mother Nature produced. To better understand this "higher power", Mankind started personalizing this power by giving it Male and Female aspects. These aspects were then given names and characteristics to coincide with the events that they were witnessing. They began seeking guidance and hope from these Deities by worshipping those that best fit their needs. Over time the Gods of Old began to take on two major distinctions. The fact that Mankind needed plants and animals to survive lead to the development of the Earth Goddess (representing plants and water) and the Horned God (representing the horned livestock they needed for food and clothing). These two major Deities soon became the focus of many religions because of the necessities that they represented.
It is these two Deities that most Pagans recognize in their prayers and ritual. It is the worship, practices and beliefs of these Old Religions that many Pagans are trying to revive in this day and age. Due to the destruction of our Planet by modern man, many people have come to the horrifying realization that we may no longer have a place to live if we continue on our destructive downward spiral of raping the Earth. Many people have chosen to follow the path of Paganism and the Old Gods in order to live a more harmonious life with Mother Earth in order to help save Her and all Her children.
